The Daily Protocol | Start Your Dog's Protocol

Nobody checks for this in your dog's food | I found out why.

The shelter told me not to take him. So I gave him the best of everything. Then one line on his food bag sent me down a rabbit hole I can't stop thinking about.

The shelter told me not to take him.

Abandoned twice. Six months old. A file full of behavioural notes.

I took him home anyway.

Firulais is 28 kilos of staffy and great dane now, and the most loyal animal I have ever met. So I went all in. I read every label. I ticked every box.

Then one night I read the front of his food bag the way I had a hundred times before.

Complete and balanced.

And for the first time, I asked:

Complete, according to who?

The answer is a legal minimum. Enough to stop a dog going short. Nothing more. Like a sailor's rations, complete because they prevent scurvy. Nobody said the sailor was thriving.

Then I found what the list leaves out. Compounds that cannot cause a deficiency, so nobody tests for them. And one name kept turning up.

Mushrooms.

My first reaction was no. Every dog owner knows that reflex.

Some wild mushrooms are seriously toxic to dogs. Never let your dog eat mushrooms found on a walk. If yours does, call your vet immediately.

But functional mushrooms are a different thing. Specific species, grown and processed for use as ingredients, and dosed carefully. Prized in traditional practice for centuries.

Reishi. Cordyceps. And astragalus, an adaptogenic herb traditionally used to support resilience to everyday demands.

Here is what stopped me. In all those centuries,

not one had ever made it into a dog's bowl.

So I built what I could not find. A single daily scoop made with vets and microbiologists. Twenty active ingredients, including those three, built to support 11 areas of health from gut and joints to skin and coat.

It is not a miracle, and it does not treat or cure anything. It fills in what the bowl was never designed to hold.

The shelter told me not to take him. I am so glad I did not listen.

Complete and balanced was the floor. This is what sits above it.
